BLDC Worm Gear Motor Troubleshooting

The worm gear motor is a transmission machine with compact structure, large transmission ratio and self-locking function under certain conditions. It is easy to install and has a reasonable structure, and is increasingly widely used. It is a multi-stage motor composed of a helical gear motor installed at the input end of the worm gear motor. It can obtain a very low output speed and has higher efficiency than a single-stage worm gear motor, and has low vibration, noise and energy. In this article, Brushless store will introduce the common faults and troubleshooting methods of worm gear motor so that users can better use it.Bldc worm gear motor

Common Problems and Causes

  1. The motor is heating up and leaking oil. In order to improve efficiency, worm gear motors generally use non-ferrous metals for worm wheels, and harder steel for worms. Because it is a sliding friction transmission, more heat will be generated during operation, causing differences in thermal expansion between the various parts and seals of the motor, thus forming gaps between the mating surfaces. The lubricating oil becomes thinner due to the increase in temperature, which is prone to leakage. There are four main reasons for this situation:
    • First, the material matching is unreasonable;
    • Second, the quality of the meshing friction surface is poor;
    • Third, the amount of lubricating oil added is incorrectly selected;
    • Fourth, the assembly quality and use environment are poor.
  2. Worm gear wear. The worm gear is generally made of tin bronze, and the paired worm material is hardened to HRC4555 with 45 steel, or 40Cr is hardened to HRC5055 and then ground to a roughness of Ra0.8m by the worm machine. The motor wears very slowly during normal operation, and some motors can be used for more than 10 years. If the wear speed is fast, it is necessary to consider whether the selection is correct, whether it is overloaded, and the material, assembly quality or use environment of the worm gear.
  3. Wear of the transmission small helical gear. This usually occurs on vertically mounted motors, and is mainly related to the amount of lubricant added and the type of oil. When installed vertically, it is easy to cause insufficient lubricant. When the motor stops running, the transmission gear oil between the motor and the motor is lost, and the gear cannot get the proper lubrication protection. When the motor starts, the gear cannot be effectively lubricated, resulting in mechanical wear or even damage.
  4. The worm bearing is damaged. When a fault occurs, even if the motor is well sealed, it is often found that the gear oil in the motor is emulsified, and the bearings are rusted, corroded, and damaged. This is because after the motor has been running for a period of time, the condensed water generated by the gear oil temperature rising and cooling is mixed with water. Of course, it is also closely related to the bearing quality and assembly process.

Solution of Common Problems

Ensure assembly quality. You can buy or make some special tools. When disassembling and installing motor parts, try to avoid hitting with hammers or other tools; when replacing gears and worm gears, try to use original accessories and replace in pairs; when assembling the output shaft, pay attention to the tolerance; use anti-sticking agent or red lead oil to protect the hollow shaft to prevent wear and rust or scale on the mating surface , which makes it difficult to disassemble during maintenance.Bldc worm gear motor problem shooting

Selection of lubricating oil and additives. Worm gear motors generally use 220 gear oil. For motors with heavy loads, frequent starts, and poor operating environments, some lubricating oil additives can be used to make the gear oil still adhere to the gear surface to form a protective film when the motor stops running, preventing heavy loads, low speeds, high torques, and direct contact between metals during startup. The additives contain sealing ring regulators and anti-leakage agents to keep the sealing ring soft and elastic, effectively reducing lubricating oil leakage.

Choose the installation position of the motor. If the position allows, try not to use vertical installation. When installing vertically, the amount of lubricating oil added is much more than that of horizontal installation, which can easily cause the motor to heat up and leak oil.

Establish a lubrication maintenance system. The motor can be maintained according to the "five fixed " principle of lubrication work, and each motor should be checked regularly by a responsible person. If the temperature rise is obvious, exceeding 40℃ or the oil temperature exceeds 80℃, the oil quality is reduced, or there is a lot of copper powder in the oil, and abnormal noise is generated, stop using it immediately, repair it in time, eliminate the fault, and replace the lubricating oil. When refueling, pay attention to the amount of oil to ensure that the motor is properly lubricated.

Through the above preventive measures and troubleshooting methods, the failure of the worm gear motor can be effectively avoided and its normal and stable operation can be ensured.
